Without Forfeiting Assets
A charitable lead trust makes it possible to give Cardinal Glennon
Children's Medical Center the income from certain assets for a number of years,
then have the principal returned to you or your family with substantial tax
savings.
If
you have a substantial estate and you anticipate high federal gift and
estate taxes, the lead trust is meant for you.
There are two types of
lead trust.
• Under a Guaranteed annuity interest, the trust pays Cardinal Glennon a
fixed dollar amount annually for the term of the trust. The trust can last
for a specific number of years or for the life of one or more individuals.
• In the
Unitrust interest variation, the trust pays Cardinal Glennon each
year a percentage of the fair market value of its assets. Again, the term of
the trust can be limited either by number of years or by certain lives.
The Advantage of a Lead Trust
In many cases an estate can be passed down to your children, grandchildren
or others either entirely free of, or at greatly decreased, gift and estate
taxes.
There will be a substantial charitable tax deduction available for the year
the trust is established.
You can also establish a lead trust that returns the trust assets to you
after a number of years. In the proper circumstances, this can also provide
