I
n this issue of Glennon Magazine you will find interesting feature articles on two of the many important services at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital – the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center. This issue also contains a special insert, “The Year in Review 2002,” which revisits events in what was a tremendous year for the hospital.

Two of the highlights of 2002 were the announcement of the latest Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards and the progress of construction around the hospital.

Last year SSM Healthcare became the first health care organization to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is given annually by the U.S. Department of Commerce to recognize the highest levels of quality management and quality achievement in various fields. Although the award was established in 1987, no health care provider had previously been honored with it. SSM Cardinal Glennon played a key role within our system in the successful pursuit of the award.

Throughout the year construction continued, ahead of schedule, on our new inpatient and ambulatory care wing and expanded Dierdorf emergency and trauma center. The first phase of the emergency center project opened in January 2003. The new patient care wing and second phase of the emergency center project are due to open late this summer.

All of this progress has been made possible by the growing generosity of our many friends. As we undertake future projects that will maintain Glennon’s status as one the most effective, child-friendly hospitals in America, we pledge to be worthy of your continuing support.
