“Car crashes are the number one killer of children 1 to 12 years old in the United States,” says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “The best way to protect them in the car is to put them in the right seat, at the right time, and use it the right way.”

Kohl’s Department Stores has awarded SSM Health Cardinal Glennon a grant of $271,375 to support the Kohl’s 4 Kids program, which helps to reduce childhood injury from being unprotected or improperly protected in cars or on bikes. Kohl’s 4 Kids enables local families to have their own car seats fitted by certified car-seat technicians, and families in need can receive free car seats. Families also can have their children’s bike helmets fitted, and families in need of them can receive free bike helmets.

Kohl’s 4 Kids also provides bike-safety education through an interactive display, called Safety Town, which program staff transport and set up at local events. The display involves a street grid with typical town buildings, road signs and even a railroad crossing. Children peddle through the streets while program staff and volunteers coach them on observing “rules of the road” for bikers. Program staff also visit local organizations to provide safety talks.

Kohl’s Cares® has partnered with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon since 2005, with gifts totaling $852,429. “Kohl’s has been an outstanding partner to Cardinal Glennon in their efforts to raise awareness on child passenger and bicycle safety,” said Sandy Koller, executive director of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. “Through their generous and substantial financial gifts to our hospital, we have made a great impact in keeping kids safe and reducing childhood risk and injury.”
