The Kohl's Passenger Safety Program in cooperation with SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center helps keep this area's kids safe while they are cruising in their family cars and while they are riding their bicycles.
|
Each week, program staff members, who are nationally certified in proper car-seat installation techniques, visit three or more easily accessible community locations for low-income families, where they check to be certain the families' car seats have been installed properly; they also give car seats to eligible families and install them on site.
Program staff members visit other locations, as well, to fit car seats where anyone -- regardless of income level -- can receive the service free of charge.

Program staff members also teach bicycle and pedestrian safety, using a demonstration trailer emblazoned with the words "Kohl's Road Wise Trailer." This vehicle carries Safety Town, an interactive display of buildings imprinted with the Kohl's logo. Safety Town is set up at events so that kids can ride the town's peddle carts that hold up to 200 pounds or tricycles, while staff and volunteers coach them on safety precautions. Also at Safety Town, bike-helmet fittings are performed, and kids with financial need can receive free helmets that will be fitted right on the spot.
In addition to the above activities, Kohl's Passenger Safety Program staff members make safety presentations to large assemblies, and they conduct national child passenger safety certification training for community partners. With this program, local families in need will receive 650 car seats, 200 booster seats and 400 bike helmets, free of charge through June 30, 2013.
