Safety Program

4-4

Every year, nearly 20,000 children in the St. Louis area are injured from motor vehicle and bicycle accidents, home accidents, guns, falls and even unsafe sleep environments. Misinformation and a lack of understanding about appropriate types of car seats, safe biking practices and safe sleep practices are commonplace, despite the increased public awareness campaigns and information available. In addition, there is a significant disparity between families who can afford necessary safety equipment and those who cannot.

The SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Safety Program provides free educational opportunities and resources to the public on a variety of topics, including safe sleep, vehicle passenger safety, bike safety, infant and child CPR and more. Through our community outreach programs, we are playing a role in reducing the overall rate of childhood injuries and contributing to the improvement of the region’s infant mortality rate. Thanks to generous donor support, families who attend our educational programs receive safety resources at no cost.

Baby Safety 101 covers a variety of topics for new and expecting parents, including safe sleep practices, the importance of prenatal and well-baby care, immunizations, oral health, home and fire safety, gun safety, poison prevention, medication safety and much more. At the conclusion of the class, families in need receive a portable crib, bedding and a variety of other items to help keep their baby safe.

Our Passenger Safety component offers hands-on education and evaluation for parents on the proper use and installation of age-appropriate car seats from certified instructors. If a child is not in the appropriate seat for his or her age and the family lacks resources to purchase a new seat, one is provided to the family at no cost. In addition, families with a medically complex child can receive free education and recommendations from our special-needs certified nurse educator.

Injury prevention is a team effort, and we are so grateful to the many donors and community partners who help make all of our programs possible!
