The Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center

When a child is sick or injured, families want the very best care available. The Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, meaning our dedicated staff can handle any type of emergency, any time of day, seven days a week.

The skilled emergency medicine physicians at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon treat a multitude of conditions, from sports injuries and asthma attacks to severe traumas and seizures. In addition, our Level I designation enables us to utilize every resource available when caring for our young patients, including trauma surgeons, pediatric specialists, a dedicated trauma operating room and imaging facilities equipped with the latest technology.

As a teaching hospital, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is a training site for Saint Louis University School of Medicine medical students and pediatric residents. Many of our teaching physicians have an average of 20 years’ experience in pediatric emergency care. In addition, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon emergency physicians are available at six hospital locations throughout the bi-state area, including north and south St. Louis County, St. Charles County and the Metro East.

Transport Team

Infants and children come to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon from all over the region. When minutes matter, they arrive with the help of our dedicated Transport Team, a group of highly-skilled paramedics, nurses and respiratory therapists who have advanced training in the safe care and transport of babies and children. The Transport Team serves hospitals in 120 counties in Missouri and Illinois and is available 24 hours a day via ambulance or helicopter.

Telemedicine

The advent of new technology and the widespread availability of broadband internet has enabled SSM Health Cardinal Glennon to partner with multiple hospitals in the region to provide Telemedicine Services, including TeleED. This technology allows SSM Health Cardinal Glennon emergency physicians to evaluate patients at other hospitals and provide consultation and expertise to their attending physicians. They are also able to determine whether the child can be cared for appropriately at their community hospital or needs to be brought to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon.

Our team of educators provides numerous programs to medical professionals and the general public on a variety of topics, including safe sleep, bike and vehicle safety and more. The support of the community enables these programs to expand each year.
